5 accessories every male lawyer should own

“A good sense of style with the right accessories can get you noticed at work”

Men's accessories

September is just around the corner. And another cohort of law grads will be joining the workforce. As you mull on your first-day suits, gentlemen, don’t forget to include some subtle accessories. It’s a great way to say, “Hey, I pay attention to details, I’m confident and I take care of myself.”

As a former marketing specialist and co-owner of a men’s fashion business, I recommend these five accessories to elevate your reputation at work.

Watch

For a man, nothing completes an outfit like an alluring timepiece. They say you’re better off having one really nice watch versus several “ok” watches. But I think this rule was for your dad’s generation.

To keep up in today’s trendy world, you should aim to have at least two simple pieces in your drawer. Nixon Watches is a great place to start. They’ve got a wide selection of classics alongside unique designs that won’t break the bank.

Cufflinks

Nothing makes you feel more like a bigwig than a french cuff shirt with well-matched cufflinks. I can’t tell you how many times my clients have commented on my cufflinks peaking out of my sleeves. Don’t be afraid to have fun with this and show a bit of your playful side. Check out Cuffwear for their selection for all occasions.

Pocket Square

Many of my lawyer friends tell me their firms are way too conservative for pocket squares. I get it, but remember the goal here is to stand out, get attention and show confidence. You don’t have to be too flashy – a simple solid colour worn like a character from Mad Men will do the trick. Or better yet, try a wooden pocket square from my store, BAFFI, that gets you that clean look without all the fuss. You can even customize your own and add engraved monograms.

Shoes

I’m assuming by now you already have a pair of simple brown leather oxfords — also known as a derby dress shoe with rounded toes (toe cap optional of course). If not, I suggest you start here for your first shoe. Gotstyle has a great option that is affordable and is so versatile. It can be worn with almost anything in your wardrobe.

The Modern Briefcase

There’s no rule saying a briefcase has to be rigid and boring. And there’s no reason it can’t be easily thrown over your shoulder. Leather bags have become an extension of our corporate identity, but the right one should be versatile enough to take to the office and that overnight trip. Coach has an amazing selection and never seem to disappoint. If you’re on a budget, Samsonite has a great option on Amazon.
