Despite its small size, the six lawyers at this 62-year-old firm manage to work across 17 practice areas. “Half of what I do is employment, but I also have tax files. And I’ve done criminal work and family motions,” says Jordan Lester, a first-year associate at the firm. “I get to do it all.”
Legal Aid Ontario
The city’s legal aid office — located a few blocks from the waterfront and home to seven lawyers — is set to expand, says Randall Ellsworth, vice president with Legal Aid Ontario. “We’re looking at creating more lawyer positions because of the need in the North.”
Sole practitioners
In Thunder Bay, 66 of the 185 lawyers are sole practitioners. By and large, they serve regular people who need a criminal, real estate or family lawyer. With affordable rent and a low cost of living Thunder Bay is an attractive spot for any lawyer who wants to go solo.
